AI vs Reality: Furnace Efficiency, Pricing, and California Regulations

Today, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others have become part of our everyday lives. That’s a good thing. These tools are powerful, helpful, and can save time.

However, blindly relying on AI without understanding real-world context, local regulations, and market realities can lead to incorrect conclusions and unnecessary conflicts.

Real-Life Example

The situation shown above is a real-life example. The client was genuinely convinced that an 80% efficiency furnace is “very toxic,” believing that “20% of the fuel goes straight up the chimney.”

In reality, this is not true. An 80% efficiency furnace is a standard, legal, and widely used solution.

Moreover, modern 80% furnaces that we install are Ultra-Low NOx certified, meaning they produce extremely low levels of harmful emissions.

Efficiency vs. Cost

Yes, there are higher-efficiency systems in the 90–98% range, but they are significantly more expensive.

In this case, the client was focused on price from the very beginning. That is exactly why an 80% efficiency option was proposed — a safe, legal solution that fully complies with California regulations.

Pricing Reality in California

The client also claimed that a furnace “should cost less than $1,000,” referencing information obtained from an AI tool.

Unfortunately, such pricing does not exist when it comes to legal installation in California. While cheaper units can be found on the market, they do not meet Ultra-Low NOx requirements and are illegal to install in CA.

Communication and Expectations

A separate conversation took place via email. The client was extremely upset that the price provided in writing was the same as the price quoted during the on-site visit.

We genuinely could not lower the price, because furnaces that are legal to install in California are objectively expensive.

Yes, the client asked for a better price, but that is not always possible — and it is certainly not a reason for rude behaviour, accusations, or insults.

Payment Options

At the same time, we offered a flexible and customer-friendly option: a 6-month, no-interest instalment payment plan with equal monthly payments.

For projects under $5,000, this is one of the best possible offers — no interest, no banks, and no hidden conditions.

The client responded by stating that his credit score was above 825 and that he would receive a better offer elsewhere. We respect that choice.
