Air Conditioner Refrigerant Recharge and Cooling Performance Restoration

A homeowner contacted us after noticing that the air conditioning system was no longer cooling the home properly. The system appeared to be running normally, but indoor temperatures remained higher than expected. During our diagnostic inspection of this Trane air conditioning system, we found that the refrigerant level was below the manufacturer's recommended operating range. Low refrigerant can cause a drop in evaporator pressure, allowing the coil temperature to fall below freezing and resulting in ice formation on the indoor coil. One unique aspect of this project was that the outdoor unit was installed on the roof of the building and had been operating under direct sunlight during a period of high outdoor temperatures. Under these demanding conditions, a low refrigerant charge can affect system performance even more noticeably, placing additional strain on the equipment and reducing cooling capacity throughout the home.

After completing the diagnostic process, we added refrigerant and monitored system pressures and operating temperatures to verify proper performance. Once the refrigerant charge was restored, the system returned to normal operating conditions and should no longer experience the icing issue.
