Modern wall-hung boiler with buffer tank: reliable and comfortable home heating
This project involved the complete removal of an existing Munchkin boiler and the installation of a modern wall-hung boiler with an integrated hydronic buffer tank. The system was redesigned to improve operational stability, eliminate short cycling, and maintain proper hydraulic separation while preserving all existing heating zones.

Wall-Hung Boiler Installation With Buffer Tank
This project involved the complete removal of an existing Munchkin boiler and the installation of a modern wall-hung boiler with an integrated hydronic buffer tank. The system was redesigned to improve operational stability, eliminate short cycling, and maintain proper hydraulic separation while preserving all existing heating zones.
Prior to installation, the heating system was fully shut down. Power, gas, and water were disconnected, and the system was drained. All surrounding surfaces and equipment were protected, and the new equipment layout was carefully verified.
The existing boiler was fully disconnected from gas, electrical, hydronic, and condensate connections. The flue system was removed, and the old boiler was completely taken off site. The installation area was then prepared for the new wall-mounted configuration.
The new wall-hung boiler was securely mounted to the wall structure with proper anchoring and manufacturer-required service clearances. A hydronic buffer tank was installed to stabilize system operation and prevent short cycling. The tank was connected using a manufacturer-approved piping configuration that clearly separates the boiler loop from the system loop.
Boiler supply water is routed directly into the buffer tank. Heating system manifolds draw supply from the tank outlet, while system return water flows back into the buffer tank before returning to the boiler. Existing manifolds and zone pumps were left untouched to preserve system balance.
Key work completed:
- ✅ Complete removal of existing Munchkin boiler and venting
- ✅ Installation of wall-hung boiler with proper clearances
- ✅ Installation and integration of hydronic buffer tank
- ✅ Reconfiguration of hydronic piping for new layout
- ✅ Preservation of existing zoning and manifold configuration
Existing copper piping was modified as needed to transition from a floor-mounted boiler to a wall-hung boiler with a buffer tank. New supply and return piping was installed between the boiler, buffer tank, and heating manifolds. Isolation valves, drain points, and service components were added where required.
A primary circulator was installed on the boiler-side loop where required. All existing zone pumps remained in operation. Flow rates were verified to match system BTU requirements.
A new two-pipe venting system was installed and routed to the exterior, with all penetrations sealed and termination clearances verified. The gas line was extended and reconfigured to the new boiler location, including installation of a shut-off valve and full leak testing.
A new condensate drain line was installed and connected to an approved discharge point. Electrical power was supplied to the boiler and controls, thermostat and zone wiring was extended as needed, and grounding and polarity were verified.
After installation, the system was filled with water and fully purged of air through the boiler, buffer tank, and heating zones. The boiler was commissioned and configured for buffer tank operation, pump control logic, and outdoor reset where applicable.
Final testing confirmed smooth boiler cycling, stable system operation, proper zoning performance, and correct venting and condensate discharge. The project was completed with full site cleanup and system walkthrough.
Result:
The heating system now operates efficiently and reliably, with improved cycle stability and proper hydraulic separation. The buffer tank eliminates short cycling while maintaining full functionality of all existing heating zones.
