Radiant Floor Heating Repair in San Francisco – Manifold Replacement and System Upgrade
Customer reported that the radiant floor heating system had stopped working about two weeks earlier. Another company had previously visited the property and installed a new thermostat, but the issue was not resolved. After the thermostat replacement, heat could only be felt in one bathroom on the third floor, while the rest of the radiant floor zones on that level remained cold.
During our visit, a complete diagnostic of the hydronic radiant heating system was performed, including inspection of the manifold assembly, circulation loop, and overall system configuration. Air was found inside the hydronic loop, preventing proper water circulation and causing several heating zones to stop working.
Further inspection showed that the main cause of the problem was incorrect system design. The installed manifold was designed for radiator heating systems, while the house uses radiant floor heating. Because of this mismatch, the system did not have the required components for stable operation, which resulted in repeated air buildup and circulation problems.
Work performed
We removed the existing manifold assembly and installed a properly configured radiant floor heating manifold designed specifically for hydronic floor systems.
- Integrated air relief valve installed
- Dedicated recirculation pump installed
- Thermostatic regulating heads installed
- Proper manifold for radiant floor heating installed
After installation, the system was fully purged, air was removed from the loop, and circulation was restored. All radiant zones are now heating evenly, including the third floor, and the system is operating normally without air-related issues.
Total cost for the customer, including parts and labor, was under $5000.
Advice for homeowners
Radiant floor heating systems require the correct manifold design, proper air elimination, and dedicated circulation components. If the wrong manifold is installed or the system does not include proper air removal, air will accumulate over time, causing cold floors, uneven heating, and repeated service calls.
Using the correct components from the beginning helps avoid expensive repairs and keeps the system running reliably for many years.
